Wealthy Countries Continue to Struggle with High External Debt to GDP Ratio's

According to the World Bank, it appears that while some developing countries managed to balance their checkbooks despite the worldwide economic downturn, the struggle continues for wealthier countries to decrease their debt. In the United States, our external debt to GDP ratio has increased from 84.1% in 2006, to 100.2% in 2012. In comparison, Portugal's external debt to GDP ratio is the highest among all the countries measured. From 2006 to 2012, their debt ratio increased from 189.0% to 228.9%. Greece has the second highest ratio but endured the largest increase in the debt ratio. In 2006, the World Bank estimated that their debt ratio stood at 125.8%. By 2012, it exploded by more than 80% to 206.4%. France has the third highest debt ratio, 190.8%, followed by Germany at 170.4%, Spain at 169.7%, Italy at 118.9%, and then the United States at 100.2%.
     
Interestingly, despite the struggles of developed countries to stabilize their debt, developing countries continue to enjoy low levels of external debt to GDP ratios. China's ratio stood at 9.5%, followed by 17.2% for Brazil, 18% for India, 27% for Mexico, 29.3% for Russia, and 41.3% for Turkey.

Mixed GDP Prospects for the Eurozone

According to a recent interactive chart by The Economist, problems surrounding the euro have eased since restructuring took place.  Spearheaded by the president of the European Central Bank, the ECB has, under specific conditions, purchased short-term bonds from countries that were facing economic decline.  Countries that were facing severe economic decline have seen gains, notably in the area of current-account deficits turning to surpluses in Ireland.  Also quite positive, Spain and Portugal's current-account deficits have been lessened.

Government debt is still a subject for concern in the peripheral countries of the Eurozone, with Portugal, Ireland, and Italy having governmental debt at over 100% of their GDP.  Greece is in the deepest debt, with government debt at 175% of the Greece's GDP.  Another area for future progress is within the increased gap between the countries within the Eurozone that are doing the lending and those that are on the recipient end of those loans; Germany's GDP will grow this year, while Greece's will fall, adding another year to its six of recession.

Low Population Mobility in European Union

A recent Economist article discusses the low cross-border population mobility within the European Union despite large variations in the unemployment rate across European nations.  This variation in unemployment rate can be seen in the first chart from the article, which shows Spain at approximately 23% unemployment as of March 2012 and Austria at less than 5%.  However, as the second graph from the article shows, few Europeans migrate within their countries and even fewer across countries in the European Union relative to the US, Canada and Australia.  The article suggests that this low mobility could be a result of language barriers, higher transaction fees and taxes for home-buyers and disincentives to move from large unemployment benefits, among other things.

One in Two Youth in Spain is Unemployed

Business Insider’s Chart of the Day for May 2^nd highlighted a graph from Scott Barber and Thomson Reuters depicting youth unemployment rates in Europe.  Greece and Spain both possessed the highest rate, with more than one in two youth being unemployed.  These two nations are followed by Portugal Italy, and Ireland, with youth unemployment rates of 36.1%, 35.9%, and 30.3% respectively.  Germany, on the other hand, has weathered the economic recession quite well, and its youth unemployment rate has actually decreased since the recession began.  In comparison to the United States’ 16.4% rate, Germany, Malta, Austria, and the Netherlands are the only nations in the EU27 with a lower youth unemployment rate.  Overall, the Euro area possesses a 22.1% youth unemployment rate.

Apple Worth as Much as All Public Companies in Spain, Greece, and Portugal

Bloomberg reports that Apple’s market value stands at $586 billion, which is nearly the same as the total market value of every single public company in Spain, Greece, and Portugal combined.  This comparison illustrates not simply Apple’s rapid growth, but also the serious consequences of Europe’s sovereign-debt crisis.  In November 2007, the value of these three nations’ public companies stood at 11 times that of Apple’s, but this peak vanished rapidly.  The debt crisis wiped $1 trillion off the total value of the nearly 500 publicly traded companies in Spain, Greece, and Portugal – a 62% plunge. 

This report comes on the heels of a recent article in The Atlantic highlighting Eurostat data on unemployment in Europe.  The data shows that Spain, Greece, and Portugal possess the unemployment rates of 23.6%, 21.0%, and 15.0% respectively, the three highest in Europe.

GDP Growth Predictions Indicate Sluggish Recovery, but Possible Return to Form In 2013 For Some Economies

Each month, The Economist asks a group of renowned economists to forecast GDP growth in 2012 and 2013.  Of the fourteen countries/regions considered in the March poll (one of which is the entire Euro area), Japan is the only nation expected to have a higher GDP growth in ’12 than in ’13.  This discrepancy is due to massive spending on earthquake-related reconstruction, as well as the government’s new policy of subsidizing energy-efficient cars.  Australia is predicted to have the highest GDP growth of all the countries, topping off at a 3.1% increase in 2012, and a 3.3% increase in 2013.  Italy and Spain performed the worst in the poll, due to great uncertainty regarding both countries’ financial stability.  Economists predict that the United States will have a 2.1% GDP growth rate in 2012, and a slightly higher 2.2% rate in 2013.  The Euro area is expected to endure negative GDP growth in the current year, with an average prediction of -0.6% change.  While it seems that the polled economists view the world to be on its way to recovery, they still view it to be an uphill battle.  The sluggish rebound from the Great Recession is characterized by the 1.4% average growth predicted in 2012, but the picture does look brighter in 2013.  The averages point to a return to form for many of the major economies around the world in 2013; however, other countries such as Italy, Spain and France are expected to remain hindered by the recession and its wide-ranging effects.   

World's Best Organ Donors

Yesterday's daily chart from The Economist compared organ donation rates across selected countries. The subject of organ donation has been in the news recently, as the British Medical Association suggested this week that Great Britain change from an opt-in system to the opt-out system more commonly featured throughout Europe. The opt-in system gives individuals the opportunity to sign up for organ donation, but does not assume that they are otherwise willing to donate; the opt-out system, on the other hand, assumes individuals are willing to donate their organs unless they opt out.

As The Economist points out, however, differences in rates may have more to do with "culture and capacity...than legal regimes." After all, "Spain has an opt-out system and leads the league with around 32 deceased donors per million people; but so does Greece, and it lurks near the bottom with four. Americans, like Britons, have an opt-in system, but also one of the highest total donation rates in the world."

Hardest-Working Countries in 2011

As the end of the work year approaches, the Economist’s daily charthighlights employee holiday entitlements around the world using Mercer data.  Of the 19 countries shown, Canada gives the fewest holidays per year, with a statutory minimum of 10 days and with a further 9 public holidays.  China is close behind, with 2 more total holidays per year, followed closely by the United States, who comes in 14^th with 25 total holidays per year.  The economically unstable countries of Spain and Greece rank 4^th and 2^nd, with 36 and 37 days off respectively.  Austria’s 38 holidays per year in 2011 tops the list.
