:BBM for iOS and Android Release Date:

BBM for iOS Release Date

BlackBerry Messenger is close to becoming a cross-platform messaging service for the first time, but when will you be able to download the app on your Android and iOS devices? BlackBerry has been pretty quiet about launch dates up until now, but a new rumor claims BBM will hit Google Play this Friday, September 20, before landing on the App Store a day later.
Indonesian website TeknoUp has published an invite to a BBM launch event in Jakarta at 12 p.m. local time on Thursday, September 19. BlackBerry is expected to confirm at the event that BBM for Android and iOS will be available before the end of the week.
 We cannot confirm the invitation is genuine, and we’re yet to hear about similar events in the U.S. or Canada — but CrackBerry has also received some dates for BBM’s cross-platform launch, and they line up perfectly. Here’s what you can expect, then, according to CrackBerry:
  • Friday, Sept 20th, 7am EST: Android version published on Google Play
  • Friday, Sept 20th, 7am EST: BBM.com goes live
  • Friday, Sept 20th, 7am EST: CRM messages sent out to pre-registrants
  • Saturday, Sept 21th: BBM on iOS becomes available 12:01 am EST, Saturday Sept 21st in local time zones.
  • Saturday, Sept 20th, 7am EST: Follow-up CRM message sent out after full App Store deployment
We had suspected that BlackBerry might wait until after Apple has launched its new iPhones before launching BBM for Android and iOS, but clearly it’s not too concerned about the news being buried under iPhone reviews and related stories.
So, if you’re lucky enough to be picking up a new iPhone on Friday, it looks like you’ll be able to use BBM on it the following day

Recreating your NotesPlus notebooks from backup

When I bought my iPad (thanks to you!) I started to use the very good NotesPlus app. It's really good and -amongst other things- it lets you annotate your PDFs.
After someone stole my iPad they also took my notes from me. Hopefully NotesPlus includes an option to automatically backup your notes to Dropbox.

Fortunately, the backup format that the app uses on Dropbox is pretty simple: it stores the background PDF you've used and a SVG file per each page with your annotations (and a lot of metadata I'm deliberately ignoring).
I've created a simple bash script for Linux/OSX (anywhere you've got BASH+ImageMagick, really) that uses the wonderful ImageMagick to extract the pages of the PDF one by one, overlay the SVG over it and then convert everything into a single PDF file once again.

Obviously it only covers one of the many use cases for NotesPlus, but it did the trick for me.
I leave it here in case it's ever useful to anybody:
#!/bin/bash

# Clear environment, just in case
export DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH=""
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=""
# Determine my running dir
MYDIR=$(dirname $0)
cd "$MYDIR"
MYDIR="$(pwd)"
# This'll save us a lot of headaches
SAVEIFS=$IFS
IFS=$(echo -en "\n\b")

# Iterate on all the notebooks found
for NOTEBOOK in $(ls | sort -n); do
    if [ -d "$NOTEBOOK" ]; then
        echo "Processing '$NOTEBOOK'"
        echo "=========================="
        cd "$NOTEBOOK"
        FILES=""
        # Do this thing for each page found
        for PAGE in $(ls | sort -n); do
            # Make sure the directory's name is an integer
            expr "$PAGE" + 1 &> /dev/null
            RETVAL=$?
            if [ -d "$PAGE" -a "$RETVAL" -eq 0 ]; then
                cd "$PAGE"
                echo "$PAGE"
                # The number of the page-1
                PAGE_1=$(expr $PAGE - 1)
                # Make the background of the SVG file transparent
                sed -i '' 's/fill:#FFFFFF;  stroke-width:2.0;/fill:#FFFFFF;  fill-opacity: 0;  stroke-width:2.0;/g' page.svg
                # Convert the background and the foregroung to PNGs
                convert -antialias -background transparent -resize 826x1169 page.svg page.png
                convert -density 400 -resize 826x1169 ../background.pdf[$PAGE_1] background.png
                # Compose an output PNG from the background+foreground
                convert -flatten background.png page.png $PAGE.jpg
                FILES="$FILES $PAGE/$PAGE.jpg"
                # Remove unneeded files
                rm -f background.png page.png
                cd "$MYDIR/$NOTEBOOK"
            fi
        done

        cd "$MYDIR/$NOTEBOOK"

        if ! [ -z "$FILES" ]; then
            echo "Creating final PDF for $(pwd)"
            IFS=$SAVEIFS
            convert -compress JPEG -adjoin -limit area 1 $FILES "$NOTEBOOK".pdf
            IFS=$(echo -en "\n\b")
        fi
    fi
    cd "$MYDIR"
done
Obviously, you must install ImageMagick on your system if you haven't already done so.

Robbed

Last week someone stole my Android phone and my iPad. As I was using those as a basis for development on this project development just got harder.

For iOS development I can still use my iPod touch but for the Android port I'm stuck with the emulator for now.

This makes things a bit more complicated for me, as the Android emulator is quite slow. On the bright side, this should force me to focus on getting the x86 build of BennuGD for Android working (it's not building in the r8 version of the x86 NDK right now because of this bug, hopefully version r8b fixes it).

I just wanted to apologize to those who sent me money for the iPad for not keeping it safe enough. I've been able to remotely lock the device. The phone should get locked in the next 48 hours, too.
Hopefully the bastard who robbed me will be left with two useless devices pretty soon.

[Update] NDK version r8b doesn't fix the bug....

After a long wait finally IPAD HD  be revealed at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. More powerful processor great memory, sleek design and HD display with alot more to be revealed .
After the demise of the mentor of Apple Steve jobs probably  is the most important day for Apple to keep prestige intact and keeping their noses in front. Apple had to make an early release because of the Galaxy’s and the Blackberry’s and the HTC’s. Apple was under immense pressure, and probably with  release Apple will keep up with their name.
Ipad HD was expected to be thicker than its ancestors but to cope up with compact design in the market; the master minds at Apple came around and used new dual-LED designs, keeping it as thinner as Ipad2. Resolution is expected to go out of the window and iPhone 4S’s retina display could transmigrate to iPad 3 too, hence providing excellence in resolution and great display.
SIRI would definitely be the part of new Ipad HD after the popularity of Siri in Iphone 4s.  While some reports revealed that Apple would release Ipad 2 8gb with Ipad HD.  Ipad HD would be probably come-up with 128gb storage model.

iPad fundraising [UPDATED]

It looks like some people have been having some trouble when publishing their BennuGD iOS games in Apple's App Store as they appear to have some problems with iOS5 running in iPad 2's.
Those problems cannot seem to be replicated in the iOS emulator and I don't know anybody who can lend me one. Also, those things are really expensive, so I cannot afford to buy one.

Some users have suggested that I set up a fundraising to buy one, as they'd be willing to donate some money, so that's what I'm doing.Right now an iPad costs €479 in Spain. Right now I can only afford to pay the first €50 €150, so I'd need the rest from users willing to see the iOS port advance.
You can see a live preview of how things are doing below:

Donations average: €26.03

If you want to donate, I believe the best way to do it is through Paypal, so you can donate in € by clicking the button below:
If you want to donate in $, please use the button below:

(See update 3)
This'll allow me to make the iOS port advance further and ensure it works just fine with the iPad, so your games will run flawlessly there. It'll also make the iOS port go forward faster, as I'll have more hardware to test it in.

I'll be raising money during 3 months (max). The idea is that if I don't get enough money to buy one by that time I'll re-donate the collected money to the BennuGD project.
However, if you'd like to get your money back in case not enough money is collected (or if you want to give it any other use, say donate it to some other open source project or some entity of any kind) please let me know.

So... thanks, let's see how this works.

[Update] I've increased my part in the fundraising up to €150.
[Update2]: SplinterGU gave me an idea yesterday by e-mail, so I'm setting up a small experiment that goes as follows:
If you donate more than the average user donation (not including mine) as published at the time of your donation in this page you'll get access to the next binary version of BennuGD for iOS two weeks before public release.
New features in the next binary version of BennuGD for iOS include:
  • mod_multi integration for multitouch support (up to 10 fingers) in your games.
  • mod_fmodex integration to be able to leverage the power of this industry-grade sound library that greatly exceeds the power of BennuGD's standard sound library, as it allows you to play several music files at once, 3D sound support, pitch control in playback, spectrum analysis... Check out the FMOD homepage to see a list of games using FMODEx for sound playback, it's amazing. You'll be able to use that same power on your games (see their sales page for licensing terms).
  • mod_sqlite to save and read game data and preferences easily using iOS's preferred file format.
  • The latest and greates in BennuGD code.
  • You'll also be helping Android users as most of the code applies to them, too.
I've started looking at how to integrate some other  new really cool feature, but that'll take longer to implement.

All the users that have already donated will get access to this early release and -of course- full source code will be published when it's released to the general public.
[Update 3]: I got it! I'll soon post a couple of photos of the thing in action and will start seeding preview binaries for those that donated. Thanks to everyone :)

iPad 2 Announcement Coming 9th February

iPad 2 300x230 iPad 2 Announcement Coming 9th February PossiblyAs the iPad 2 gets closer to the "rumored launch", we are now hearing that Apple [AAPL] might be announcing it on February 9th.

Reasons for this are a little different than you'd probably expect. The normal route is that we hear a conference center has been booked out by Apple and then a cryptic invite arrives shortly after. This time, it's related to the press images used that show the original iPad, and some images found in iOS 4.3.

The original press images show a calendar date as 27 January which was the date the first iPad was introduced last year. In the new iOS 4.3 beta that just arrived, a screen shot of the iPad is available (for wallpaper purposes) that shows a date of the 9th February.

As we say, it's an unusual way of looking in to things but it's certainly a possibility that we'll get the new announcement on or around the 9th Feb ready for an April 2011 rumored launch date.

We'll post more details when we hear them.
