Red Bean Pau

Today is a holiday and a good opportunity to make something for the family. I made some pau for evening tea and since it is a big batch, it will also be enough for breakfast tomorrow. This recipe is my favourite since many years because it produces very soft pau. This time I tried to play with some rose shapes. First time I saw rose shape in DG's blog and then by many other bloggers but did not manage to try it out until today.

Makes: 20 pcs (small size)
INGREDIENTS:
300g HongKong / Pau Flour
1 tsp Baking Powder
6g Instant Yeast
1 tiny pinch Ammonia Powder
60g Castor Sugar
150ml Warm Water + 1 tbsp Corn Oil
Ready-made Red Bean Filling

METHOD:
1. Place all dry ingredients into a mixer bowl, attached with a dough hook.
Process while pouring water & oil mixture gradually until smooth.
2. Knead dough with hands for few minutes until smooth.
Place in a bowl & cover until it risen doubled about 40 minutes.
3. Knead again and divide into 20 balls.
Flatten, place filling and pleat.
4. Place onto a piece of paper & steam 12 minutes.

Inti Kacang Merah yg siap

CARA2:
1. Letakkan kesemua bhn2 yg kering ke dlm mangkuk pengadun.
Tuangkan sedikit2 campuran air & minyak sambil di adun sehingga rata & sebati.
2. Uli dgn tangan sehingga doh betul2 lembut.
Letakkan ke dlm mangkuk & ditutup sehingga kembang 2x ganda (lebih kurang 40minit).
3. Uli lagi & bahagikan kpd 20 ketul.
Leperkan & isikan dgn inti kacang merah.
4. Lapikkan pau dgn kertas & kukus 12 minit.

TIPS UNTUK DAPATKAN PAU YG CANTIK:
1. Jangan guna tepung gandum tapi tepung hongkong/pau shj supaya pau berwarna putih, tidak kuning & lembut gebu.
2. Uli tepung sehingga betul2 licin.
3. Jangan kukus terlalu lama supaya pau tidak berkedut.

Stein, "Historians Before the Bench: Friends of the Court, Foes of Originalism"

Joshua Stein (J.D. candidate, Yale Law School) has posted "Historians Before the Bench: Friends of the Court, Foes of Originalism." It is forthcoming in Volume 25 of the Yale Journal of Law & the Humanities (2013). Here's the abstract:

Historians, I contend, can more effectively influence the Court and reclaim their authority to interpret the past without surrendering their professional principles. They must first understand that their attempts to get involved in originalist debates fall short in three ways: (1) they traffic in certitudes, which are anathema to the historical vocation; (2) they accept and legitimize the normative, originalist premise that the past ought to inform the present; and (3) they search for historical analogies to satisfy the Court’s originalists when they are better served locating or contextualizing persuasive case law. This Note will examine these three matters in turn in Parts One, Two and Three. In Part Four, I argue that historians can and should pursue alternative approaches in their briefs. Responding to each of the three issues named above, respectively, they should (1) attack originalist arguments by destabilizing their historical conclusions, (2) adopt alternatives to originalist advocacy in their amicus briefs, or (3) craft briefs narrowly in the fashion of a historical “special master.” All three approaches would bring an urgent relevancy to historical advocacy without sacrificing historical principles.

And a brief excerpt from the conclusion:

The historical past should not always play an important role in legal decisions, especially not when text or precedent suggest a clearer path. But when the past does figure into a decision, the Court should welcome input from professional historians. And likewise, historians should feel they can contribute something of value beyond speaking to original intentions. Within the guidelines suggested in this Note, historians can pursue a strategy that suits their professional philosophies and puts their versions of the past on the public record. Whether the Court wants to listen or not is, and always has been, its prerogative. Be that as it may, members not only of the bench but also of the bar lose something of value if historians bow out of amicus advocacy altogether. If jurists are willing to listen to and engage with historians, even without always agreeing with them, then the legal community will benefit from a deeper, richer understanding of the past.

The rate of participation in labor force in the U.S. will regain 0.7% in 2013-2014

Five years ago we published a paper with a model describing the evolution of labor force participation rate, LFP, in developed countries. Among other countries, we presented a prediction for the U.S. We used the change in a younger population cohort and foresaw the fall by 1.5% in 2010. Figure 1 reproduces Figure 8 from the paper. This dramatic fall happened on time. It was a success of the model.

Figure 1. Prediction of the LFP evolution in the USA between 2000 and 2014 from the number of 3-year-olds. Flat segment between 2004 and 2009 will end up in a rapid drop by 1.3% after 2010. This is the effect of an elevated (above potential) real economic growth.

The predicted curve in Figure 2 was obtained from real GDP per capita as a proxy to the population change (see the article for details). Both curves in Figure 2 almost coincide between 1960 and 2012. The largest deviations are observed in the years of biggest revisions to the LFP after decennial censuses and changes to GDP definitions. Therefore, they can be neglected as having artificial character.

The model predicts the secular change in the LFP!

In 2011 and 2012, the rate of participation is expected to hover near 64.5%, but actually fell to 63.7%. As an option explaining the observed deviation, the rate of GDP growth in 2011 and 2012 could be overestimated. As an alternative, the rate of participation in labor force may rise by 0.7%. This is in line with the predicted fall in the rate of unemployment to 6% by the end of 2013.
