The peony, beauty of spring

It’s one of my favorite times of the year – peony season. :) It’s a downright shame they only bloom for a week or so once a year!

I don’t even know why I picked up our state flower to plant a few years back – I saw them blooming at the nursery and thought they were lovely, but I didn’t fall head over heals until last year when the bigger plant really started producing:

light pink fragrant peony

Now? I’m obsessed. If they bloomed all summer I’d have them everywhere, but for now I stick with hydrangeas. :)

There are a TON of peony varieties – in the thousands really. There’s a great list you can check out here. I’m not even sure of mine, but I am pretty sure this one is the Hermione. The scent is heavy on these – absolutely intoxicating. I’ve never smelled a flower like it.

I have two bushes that haven’t bloomed in years and they finally did so this year – I was surprised to see the hot pink version when they did: hot pink peony

I only got about six blooms between the two but it’s progress! These darker pink flowers didn’t smell as much and they aren't nearly as big as my lighter ones.

The lighter pink blooms fall to the ground because they are so big and heavy. Just simply gorgeous! There are two things peonies need – full sun and a cold winter. They need the cold to create buds, so those of you in the south will probably get a gorgeous green bush and nothing more. :)

You can cut it down anytime after the blooms are gone but I leave it throughout the summer and fall because it’s such a big, lush plant.

Many of you on FB and Instagram (where I shared their progress) mentioned the tiny ants that live inside them. I don’t have too many, never have, and I’m not sure why. But I’ve learned a trick to get rid of little critters on my cut flowers:

getting bugs off of cut flowers

I give them a bath in some soapy, cool water. I went a little heavy on the soap here by accident, you don’t need quite this much. But I let them soak for at least a few minutes:

Mine were starting to wilt in the heat a bit and then the water makes them look even worse but don’t worry, they’ll bounce back!

Before I put any cut flower in a vase I always cut off any leaves that would be in the water – leaving them can turn the water gross fast. I rinsed the flowers very lightly (they look so delicate but are strong!) and then very lightly tapped them against the side of the sink to get the water out and to puff them back up again.

Within a few minutes after drying they had perked back up and looked better than they had outside!:

I love big blooms and I cannot lie. :)

I have six or so in here and it’s crazy full:

how to grow peony plant

These have been going strong for the past few days and I’ve got a few more that were just opening up that I’ll bring in soon.

It’s always an internal struggle for me when they bloom – leave them outside and enjoy them there or bring them in? But of course I end up bringing them in so I can see them all day. :)

If you are in the right zone (the further north the better) these are incredibly easy plants to grow – I do next to nothing every year. The larger one has produced quite a bit the past couple of years, I just hope the other two follow suit soon.

Love them!:

Do you have any tricks for getting the little bugs off of flowers? Do you grow peonies? They are everywhere here in Indiana – so pretty. There are varieties in pink, hot pink, white and coral. They tide me over nicely until my hydrangea start to bloom (any day!).

Have a great weekend my friends!

Savory Ricotta Tart – Thin to Win

I got a food wish for a ricotta cheesecake recently, which sounded fantastic, but with bikini season rapidly approaching, my love handles and I thought we’d compromise and do a savory, sugar-free version instead.

I love the simple combination of really good ricotta and fresh herbs, baked with just enough eggs to hold things together. I was in the mood for some heat, but things like pepper and cayenne are totally optional.

As I alluded to in the video, I usually do this as a pie, which comes out about twice as thick, but I wanted to try it in tart-form and the pan I used was clearly too large. Next time I’ll simply double the ingredients, and add about 10 or 15 minutes to the cooking time, and I recommend you do the same.

Keep this humble pie in mind when the “way too many vegetables” part of summer rolls around. This could be a great base for using up leftover veggies in a very fritatta-like way. I hope you give it a try soon. Enjoy!

Ingredients for 6 thin portions:
1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs, toasted in some olive oil
olive oil to coat pan
2 large eggs
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
cayenne or other hot peppers to taste
1/4 cup fresh chopped or torn basil
1 tbsp chopped Italian parsley
tiny pinch nutmeg
1 1/2 cups ricotta cheese
1 oz finely greated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese (about 1/2 cup if the real stuff, otherwise 1/4 cup packed of the fake “stuff”)
*Bake at 325 for about 20 to 25 minutes, or until set.

Barn light love

Hey hey all! I’m back today with a little progress in the mud room. I am SO excited – I love when things come together the way they look in my head. :)

Because this space used to be a laundry/mud room combo, and it drove me absolutely mad, and was always a disaster:  pit of despair

We had outlets in that little nook where the washer and dryer were. I kept them when I added the DIY bench and the beadboard. I’m not sure what we’ll ever use them for, but I’m not one to ever cover up an outlet: DIY mud room bench

You never know when you might want them!

So because the two outlets were perfectly spaced on the wall I got an idea a few months back, and it finally came to fruition:

barn lights

Sconces baby! Yeah!

Our electrician friend has been crazy busy so I figured I would do it when he was available. He was free a few days ago so for $150 I had these installed in a couple hours!

Did you know if you have an outlet, you can add a sconce above it? You just need to tie into the electrical and add a switch – no biggie. ;) Actually, it doesn’t seem that hard, so I’m determined to figure out how to do this on my own. I have so many spots in the house I’d like to add some wall lighting.

I am so thrilled with how they look! Ack, I just love them:

I was so happy I celebrated by painting the door trim in the room! Everything still needs one more coat of glossy white, but I’m just happy to not have the bare wood staring at me every day.

The galvanized barn lights were from Lowe’s:

They don’t match the hardware in there exactly, but I’m not worried about it. It’s the same lighter tone. It is SO nice to have added light in here: The main light in the room is a fluorescent light, and while it is very bright, it’s so dang ugly. :) I’m thinking of replacing it so it will be nice to have another light source.

I just think they are adorable:

bench made of kitchen cabinets

That little mark on the wall above the pillows needs to be touched up – that was where he was going to put the light switch but our old dryer vent was there, so it’s on the right instead.

It’s coming together! This room has undergone a HUGE transition and it’s functioning so well for us. I’m so grateful we were able to move the washer and dryer to the basement.

Our cats LOVE that bench cushion, by the way. One of them is laying on it every time we walk in the door:

Even our elusive Maine Coon came out for photos. ;) He doesn’t show up here on the blog often.

I’m getting closer to the end of the DIY list for this room…a little more painting, touch ups, the storage on the wall above the bench, crown molding…and then some fun final touches like art and a few accessories. Can’t wait!!

Have you added sconces anywhere in your home? I’ve used plug in versions a few times in our house – in our master, the basement and two in the Bub’s room. Love the look of them!

June before and after!

Hello everybody! It’s time to kick off June (can you believe it?) with another before and after link up. I so enjoy looking through all your projects and homes – blogs are pretty awesome. :)

I’m sharing a few that caught my eye and then we’ll see what you’re up to this month. I was SHOCKED when I saw the before photo of this sofa:

upholstering old sofa

It was a Craigslist find and Cheryl had incredible vision (and a great upholsterer) – it just goes to show that a good quality sofa can be transformed. I absolutely love the new look.

There were two kitchen redos that caught my eye – first up was Laura’s before and after:

kitchen redo white cabinets

Can you believe the difference? Amazing! She shared a whole before and after house tour, be sure to check it out.

Michelle shared the progress her kitchen has made over the years as well:

white kitchen white backsplash

Her kitchen table is gorgeous too!

I love a good knock off and I love a lighting knock off even more – Tasha’s take on a West Elm light fixture was brilliant:

And Carrie’s fixture was so simple it’s just ridiculous:

orb light fixture knock off

I have one of those orbs and the thought never even crossed my mind!

Haeley shared one of the easiest, cheapest tricks for large artwork:

DIY art with canvas and fabric

Her whole master bedroom turned out beautifully, check it out here.

So inspiring, all of you!

As always, if you’d like to pin these projects, please do so from their respective sites. :)

Now let’s see what you’ve been up to over the past month! If you’d like to be considered for next month’s review, please include a link to TDC or this button in your post:

Here you go!:

Chorizo & Chicken Skewers – Make Some For Your Buddy

At some point this summer, you’ll get tired of grilled chicken. Any grilled chicken. No matter the marinade, or the delivery system, you will have simply reached your limit, and that’s when you need to reach for the chorizo.

Impale a few slices of this famously delicious, Spanish sausage in between your chunks of chicken, and as it grills, it will splatter its spicy, smoky fat all over its much blander skewermate, and once again, you and grilled chicken will be good buddies...just like Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte.

That reference will make a lot more sense once you watch the beginning of the video. Anyway, this is nothing more than a suggestion to help cure grilled chicken fatigue, and as usual, I expect you to tailor this concept to your own strange and exotic tastes. I hope you give this a try soon. Enjoy!

Ingredients for 4 Skewers:
8 oz chorizo sausage, cut in 16 pieces
2 large chicken breasts, cut in 10 pieces each
1/2 red onion
1 red bell pepper
salt and pepper to taste
1 tsp smoked paprika
cayenne to taste
1 tbsp sherry vinegar
1 tbsp olive oil
2 tsp minced fresh oregano

Next Up: Chorizo Chicken Skewers
