The first ever Brockley Front Garden sale is tomorrow, 11am-4pm.
More than 50 houses are taking part. You can see the full list of gardens on the BrocSoc website and look out for bunting and balloons indicating participating houses (or children's birthday parties you might want to crash).
The Brockley Front Garden Sale, September 7th
The Brockely Society is organising a mass-participation garden sale from 11am-4pm on Saturday, September 7th - a jumble sale answer to Brockley Open Studios.
They say:
We're staging a coordinated front-garden table-top sale to end the summer.
Come and buy, from one front garden to the next, or one that's near you! Look out for balloons, ribbons, bunting at participating houses.
If you want to participate, the closing date for listing your stall on our list is Wednesday 4 September - please email gardensale@brockleysociety.org.uk with your house no. + street + postcode.

Time for another Jubilee bauble. BrocSoc writes:
22 May - gather from 12.45pm at the cafe on Hilly Fields, where we will be planting the Jubilee Tree donated by the Tree Council at Hilly Fields. Meet at the café from 12.45pm.
Students from Prendergast school will come out at 1.15pm for the ceremony. Several people from the Brockley 50+ Club, which meets at Brockley Social Club, will share some memories of the Coronation with us and then they and the students will plant the tree.
This is a prestigious occasion for Brockley as there will be only 60 trees throughout the country to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. A digital record of all 60 plantings will be presented to Her Majesty in June. The tree itself will have a smart plaque which will be readable from smartphones.
Please do join us -- Brockley Society tree officers, Friends of Hilly Fields, Seniors, and Prendergast School students -- for this special occasion.

It should be an interesting evening. We have invited Nicholas Taylor, architectural historian and former chair of Lewisham Planning Committee, along to talk about "The Conservation of Communities", and perhaps his recollections of planning in Lewisham and Brockley when he served as the councillor responsible for planning for the borough in the seventies and eighties.
Some people might remember Nicholas from the recent documentary on Deptford High Street - The Secret History of Our Streets. He was the chap who was pounced on by the program makers, and inadvertently became the villain of the piece. I spoke to him at length about it after the airing, and he convinced me that he had been unfairly represented. So we invited him to speak to us at our annual open meeting - so we might hear his real views about planning in the city, and how it can support communities.

Breakspears Mews Community Garden Project: Soup and Enthusiasm needed

We are getting a stage nearer to creating Breakspears Mews Community Garden! The rubbish will finally be cleared next week -- so we need serious help on Saturday and Sunday 9 and 10 March from "builders" and DIY enthusiasts with hard landscaping and filling the raised beds with soil.
