Week 31

Another giant winter storm hit Brigham City on Friday night and left 8 or 10 inches of snow.  Luckily, the sun came out Saturday monring and with the plows, the roads were soon clear.  The skies were severe clear on Sunday, when I took these photos.

Better Communications: Make A Plan, Stan!

By Virgil R. Carter

Have you been caught in the communications trap? I have and it’s not pretty. At the annual meeting, a respected past president says into the microphone, “This organization does a crappy job of communicating. I never know what’s going on, except for my annual dues invoice! What should I renew when this organization can’t communicate any better than that?” Does this ring a bell?

Communications are vitally important. The challenge is that most associations have a wide range of audience segments. These segments are interested in some messages (and media) and not others. This is a case of “I want what I want when I want it (the way I want it).” There is no simple, single solution for communications with diverse members and customers. We are not all a size 6, living in one geographical area!

What to do? One useful proactive tool is creation of an annual communications plan. Conceived at the outset of each fiscal year, and modified as may be necessary during the year, the plan contains a small number of high priority messages for the year. For example, the messages might focus on new technical information, strategic priorities, and/or association achievements which improve the value proposition for members and customers.

A communications plan also includes a schedule of key events and appropriate media to reach desired audience segments during the year. Your public relations staff can use the communications plan and schedule as the guide for creating messages, presentations and articles throughout the year for volunteer and staff leaders.

For an annual communications plan to work, it must have the understanding and support of senior volunteer leaders, senior executives and communications staff. These are the folks who will be doing most of the communications during the year. Volunteer and staff leaders must understand that their individual, personal messages are secondary to the consistent presentation of the important messages from the organization each year. This is what makes for better, more effective communications which reaches more and more of your important members and customers.

Reaching your members and customers effectively is aided by repetition. Yes, I said repetition! Repetition enables more audiences to become more aware of and understand important communications. Have you ever wondered why commercials are so repetitive? One-time messages simply don’t have much impact.

If you want to improve your association’s communications, try working with your volunteer and staff leaders to create an annual message plan, and update it every year. It’s one of the surest ways to reach members and customers—even the members who are challenging to reach.

Chat without Yahoo Messenger or Gtalk

Can we chat without Yahoo messenger? Most of us are familiar with the most widely used applications such as Yahoo messenger and Gtalk to carry out chatting with our friends. But here I’ll show how to chat without Yahoo messenger or Gtalk. As we all know the information we exchange with their servers(Yahoo or Gtalk) are recorded and stored along with the corresponding IP addresses. This may hurt our privacy since all the information we exchange while chatting has to pass through a third party server.

Moreover if the matter is highly confidential, then it is necessary to have a totally private chat where the messages are exchanged only between the people involved in the chat and not with any other third party servers. At these situations, it is better to chat without Yahoo messenger.

So, how to carry out a private chat without Yahoo messenger or Gtalk?

For this purpose there exists many softwares that support’s you to host a web-based chat system without any additional software or services. So with these softwares the exchange of messages takes place directly between the two persons engaging in the chat and will not pass through any other third party server. This ensures 100% privacy and eliminates the desperate need to chat with Yahoo messenger.

One of my favorite program for private chat is Easy Chat Server

Easy Chat Server is a Windows program that allows you to host a web-based chat system without any additional software or services. Unlike other chat server, you do not need to install Java. It allows you to build one or more web-based chat rooms on your machine, and provides advanced chat functionalities aiming to offer discussion space for your users, customers and partners.

Here are some of the screenshots of Easy Chat Server.

Key Features of Easy Chat Server:

  • Easy to use, Simple installation that will have you up and running in minutes.
  • 128-Bit Security Socket Layer(SSL) support. Support for server level certificate creation.
  • Instantly runs a complete chat server on your PCs – does not need to install any Web Server.
  • Supports full private messaging and One to One private chat.
  • Support of images, smileys, avatar icons.
  • Full chat and access logs are available within the chat server.
  • Have a built-in IP Filter, supports banning/unbanning IP address, securely.
  • Multiple styles available for the user to customize rooms.
  • Unlimited rooms and users, no any annual, per-user, or maintenance fees.
  • No spyware, adware or other unwanted extra programs.

Get a Call from your own Cell Phone number

Here is a trick to get a call to your cell phone from your own number. Do you think I am crazy? No, I am not…….

Just try the following steps and you’ll get a call to your cell phone from your own number.

1. Just give a missed call to this number. You’ll not be charged!

+41445804650

2. Wait for a few seconds and you’ll get a call to your cell phone from your own number

3. Receive the call. You’ll hear a lady voice asking for a PIN number. Just enter some rubbish number.

4. She say’s- Your PIN cannot be processed and the call disconnects..

ANOTHER TRICK

Instead of giving a missed call, just continue calling. The call will not be received and will get disconnected just after a while. But now do you know what happen’s?

You will get a call from the number

+501

Just try and pass your comments. Tell me whether the second trick worked or not!

Gov Walker Withstands Violent Rehetoric, Fake Caller, Questionable Doctors Notes, and Fleebaggers During Wisconsin Budget Battle

Observations and analysis on the $3B Wisconsin state budget crisis:
  • The genesis of a new political term: "fleebagger" (Twitter hashtag #fleebagger sometimes #fleabagger; blogoshere example Michelle Malkin who also uses the term "Party of Truancy") to describe those who abdicate duty for protest and flee to a fleabag motel. Note that the right's use of this term provides a high road contrast to the sexually-explicit left's term of "teabagger." (see Urban Dictionary; reader discretion advisory)
  • Gov. Scott Walker is a strong leader. He's calm and doesn't deviate from the basic task of government of fiscal functionality. Reminds me of Chris Christie.
  • Where is Obama's condemnation of the union protester's uncivil comparisons (see example photos at Doug Ross At Journal) using crosshairs over Walker's face and Hitler comparisons, when just a few weeks ago at the AZ shootings memorial service he took a supposed strong stance for civility? Obama is weak and his lack of prior executive experience continues to glare--even now halfway through his presidency.
  • And where is the condemnation by Obama of his own party's Democratic member of the U.S. House, Michael Capuano (MA-08) urging union supporters to "get a little bloody" with their protests in the streets? (New American including video)
  • Wouldn't it be nice if the Democrats in the U.S. Senate were to go into hiding, too? In 2012 America has the opportunity to send 23 of these Democrats and Progressive Independents out of the public eye. (themostsearched, Nov 2012)
  • Many of the Wisconsin union protesters are paid while tea party protesters pay their own expenses. Tea party rallies are more often on weekends so that tea party patriots can work and contribute to society and family. Many a Wisconsin state employee including teachers used questionable doctors' notes issued at the union protest rally (MacIver Institute, Feb 19) and illegally abused sick pay to protest, putting children and classrooms behind protest and pay. (politics.gather.com)
  • Union dues help fund the election of Democrats and are unfair to those who contribute but do not support different candidates than those to whom the union decides to give their due money to.
  • These union dues are no small change as Commentator Charles Krauthammer points out: "[Unions] are worried to death if you give teachers and others a choice to pay $1,000 a year in union dues or not, some of them may actually say, 'I think I can use that thousand dollars.'" (O'Reilly Factor transcript, Feb 22).

Concerning leftist blogger Ian Murphy who posed as David Koch in a phone interview this week with Wisconsin Gov. Walker ("Koch Whore" to use Murphy's disparaging term), seeking to entrap the Governor (coverage including full audio at FireAndreaMitchell.com):

  • Murphy fails reader in the title his supposed expose "Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker answers his master’s call." That Koch is the supposed "master" makes no sense because Walker fails to recognize the so-called "master's" voice. David Koch's real voice can be heard here: (Youtube). Walker also fails to question impostor-Koch's offer of "flying to Cali" when Koch is a longtime resident and philanthropist of NYC (Wikipedia).
  • Walker plays along friendly with the call, calming asserting his position while not falling for the foul language or attempts at dirty play. Walker responds exactly how he should have, exactly like how one would respond to any media with exception of detailing appropriate GOP strategy.
  • The Left thinks conspiratorially: many of their writings reflect their belief that the Koch brothers are the financial seed-planters of the tea party. As a self-described tea party member, I had never heard of the Koch brothers until now as the tea party is devoid of centralized leadership and formal membership.
  • The Left are preoccupied with right-wing conspiracy such because they have their own financial seed-planter George Soros and unprecedented access to President Obama by SEIU's Andy Stern, Goldman Sach's Lloyd Blankfein, and AFL-CIO's Richard Trumpka (see articles WashingtonExaminer.com and above-referenced O'Reilly Factor transcript).
  • Murphy could (and should) face criminal identity theft charges. The Freedom Fighter's Journal does a thumbs up job in examining Wisconsin state law and makes a strong case for such charges. I wonder whether Wisconsin law would apply, New York law, the state of origin of Murphy's call, or any of the above depending on who wanted to run with it.
  • In addition to or instead of criminal charges, Mr. Murphy could face a civil defamation of character or related lawsuit by David Koch.
  • Murphy has written offensively in the past including "F*ck the Troops" and "Let There Be Retards" (The Daily Caller)

Take a screen shot..

:: Take a screen shot ::

Ever see something on your screen that you’d like to e-mail or save for later? With Microsoft Windows XP, you can take a screen shot and capture an exact image of what’s on the screen.

Screen shots are useful in many ways. For example, if you receive an error message, you can take a screen shot and send your support person an exact replica of the error window, which makes communicating about the error simple. You can also use a screen shot to show someone a Web page without sending them a link. Microsoft uses screen shots to demonstrate how to do tasks within Windows. If you’re helping someone with a computer task or problem, and you can’t be right there with that person, you can use screen shots to illustrate your points through e-mail, instant messaging, or Microsoft Word.

Note: The only times you can’t take a screen shot are before you log on to your computer and when you are playing a video in Microsoft Windows Media Player.

To take a screen shot and save it as a picture

1.

Click the window you want to capture. Press ALT+PRINT SCREEN by holding down the ALT key and then pressing the PRINT SCREEN key. The PRINT SCREEN key is near the upper right corner of your keyboard. (Depending on the type of keyboard you have, the exact key names on your keyboard may vary slightly.)

Note: You can take a screen shot of your entire desktop rather than just a single window by pressing the PRINT SCREEN key without holding down the ALT key.

2.

Click Start, click Accessories, and then click Paint.

Start, All Programs menu expanded to access Paint on Accessories menu

3.

In the Paint window, click Edit, and then click Paste.

Paint window with Paste selected on the Edit menu

4.

When the image appears in the Paint window, click File, and then click Save As.

Paint window with Save As selected on the File menu

5.

In the Save As dialog box, in the File name box, type a name for the screen shot, and then click Save.

Save As dialog box with a screen shot name typed in the File name box

You can now print or e-mail the saved screen shot just like you would any other picture.

Inflation and unemployment in Switzerland: from 1970 to 2050

We have started writing a new monograph. As always, it’s an exciting process. This time we would like to collect all results on inflation and unemployment in OECD countries and to carry out a rigorous statistical analysis. We include only those OECD members who provide an extensive statistics on inflation, unemployment and labor force. As a result, some countries will not be modeled.

Switzerland was not fully modeled in our monograph on mechanomics. We have written a paper and submitted it to the MPRA. Now it is available via RePEc:

Inflation and unemployment in Switzerland: from 1970 to 2050
Abstract

An empirical model is presented linking inflation and unemployment rate to the change in the level of labour force in Switzerland. The involved variables are found to be cointegrated and we estimate lagged linear deterministic relationships using the method of cumulative curves, a simplified version of the 1D Boundary Elements Method. The model yields very accurate predictions of the inflation rate on a three year horizon. The results are coherent with the models estimated previously for the US, Japan, France and other developed countries and provide additional validation of our quantitative framework based solely on labour force. Finally, given the importance of inflation forecasts for the Swiss monetary policy, we present a prediction extended into 2050 based on official projections of the labour force level.

Helping Your Board to Be More Effective - Five keys for high-level governance

By Virgil R. Carter

Despite the great diversity among non-profit organizations, we all seek effective governance by our boards.

A critical starting point is to recognize what a vital resource time is. Recruiting new board members is challenging because volunteers are concerned about drains on their time. Governing well is critical because a board’s time together is limited. Thus, how you and your board use your time matters.

Boards that are forward-looking, focused on strategy, provide the maximum effective (and enjoyable) leadership when time is limited. Strategic boards spend the majority of their time identifying broadly important outcomes, setting priorities, and monitoring the way the staff and other volunteers implement major initiatives.

Here are five steps volunteers may take for an effective, productive, and rewarding board.

1. Define success. Establish and practice a shared definition of organizational success. No matter how well an organization may perform in any 12-month period, if it can’t perform effectively year in and year out, it can’t really be called a successful organization. Thus, success has a lot to do with consistency and continuity over time.

2. Understand your core assets. Every organization has core assets. Typically they include: 1) knowledge, 2) community, and 3) advocacy. These are the resources for an organization’s accomplishment of its mission. Volunteers and staff must be strategically focused on the welfare of assets that cause members and customers to value the organization.

3. Think the unthinkable. Ours is a rapidly changing world in which we face unprecedented competition. To remain both up-to-date and competitive, focus on and prepare for the unthinkable—both opportunities and threats. Effective boards consider the one thing that would most revolutionize their organization and the one thing that would most jeopardize it. Thereafter, boards focus strategically to realize the opportunity and head off the threat.

4. Set priorities and monitor them. Resources are always finite—there are never enough. So develop strategic priorities and communicate what is truly important. To maintain a strategic perspective, boards must think in terms of what is important, not how to achieve results. The staff and others of the organization’s operational side are the ones to be held responsible for executing the action.

5. Establish a respectful staff partnership. The professional staff of an organization offer important resources—so important that it may be impossible for a board to be truly strategic without them. For example, staff members may have access to knowledge, contacts, and resources that may be unknown to a board. The staff is uniquely positioned to help develop and implement a definition of organizational success that’s built upon consistent performance, year after year.

Effective boards are both enjoyable and productive where it matters most: achieving the organization’s mission.

Big Storm.

It was 60°F last weekend and of course all the snow in town melted.  Yesterday morning, it started raining and then around 8 pm, it started snowing.  By this morning, there was nearly a foot of heavy, wet snow at my house in Brigham City.

The temple lot and construction was also covered in snow.

Top 10 Used iPhone Buying Tips - We Cover 16g, 8gb and 4gb Used iPhones

Used iPhone Tip #1: Seek Out Refund Options

Long before you put your money into a used iPhone for sale; make certain the provider of the Phone has a decent return policy, and one that preferably supplies you with a cash back option. Upon the receipt of the used iPhone, inspect the item carefully for exterior damage and interior water damage, and then test the item to make sure it works. If it fails to work, make sure you follow the guidelines set in the used iPhone return policy carefully; some providers of used Apple iPhone 4g, 8gb, and 16gb products place a strict time limit on the time that the consumer has to return the item for cash back or exchange.

Tip #2: Be Selective About Your Used iPhone Purchase

If this is your very first time investing in an iPhone, familiarize yourself with the various features that accompany the iPhone; this way, when you see all the offers out there, you will be able to know precisely what it is you are getting for your money. If you are not new to the iPhone buying experience and you are interested in upgrading your old Apple iPhone 4gb device of any other iPhone for something with more features and options, again familiarity with Apple iPhone offerings is needed. When a consumer knows what is currently available on the market, they are in a better position when it comes time to make their buying decisions.

Tip #3: Buy a Used iPhone with the Appropriate Carrier

Not all iPhones work with every single carrier and this is probably one of the biggest reasons for having to return these phones back to the sellers. The buyer of a used iPhone must seek out a quality phone which is completely compatible with the consumer's preferred cell phone provider.

Tip #4: Verify FCC Compliancy of Used iPhones Since the year 2005

The Federal Communication Commission has implemented a regulation whereby all mobile phone devices must be GPS enabled. The reason for such a regulation is simple; when an emergency arises and the cell phone user dials 911 assistance, if the device is GPS enabled the individual placing the emergency call can be located. If, by chance, a consumer gets a used iPhone that is not GPS enabled, then the item will not work. Therefore, it is best if the consumer questions whether or not the used iPhone in question is FCC complaint and GPS enabled before paying for the device.

Tip #5 Buy a used iPhone with a Verifiable ESN

All cell phones, including used iPhones, come with an electronic serial number. This number is needed in order to activate the phone that is purchased. If the ESN number is one that has been listed as stolen or lost, the used iPhone will not activate when the consumer goes to set up service. If shopping for used iPhones online, be sure to look and see if the seller of the device willingly offers the ESN number of the product they are selling. With an ESN number you can instantly verify whether or not the phone can be easily activated and if the phone is blacklisted.

Tip #6: Verify the Used iPhone Seller's Experience

When buying a used iPhone it is really like buying any other product: you are going to want to know as much about the used iPhone seller's reputation as you can. Check out the iPhone seller's experience by reviewing any feedback that might be presented, by examining what the used iPhone seller stocks, and by asking the seller a lot of questions. The better a consumer gets to know who they are interacting with, the smoother the used iPhone buying transaction will be. If possible, make sure that the seller's primary business focus is on selling used cell phones so that you can rest assured in knowing that the seller specializes in the product that interests you.

Tip #7: When Buying From Online Auctions Know the Seller

If you are electing to buy used iPhones from an online auction, you will find that it is easier to identify a quality seller than you might first imagine. When seeking an auction seller of a 4gb used iPhone, an 8gb used iPhone or a 16gb used iPhone make sure you take a couple of minutes to examine the feedback supplied by other buyers. Feedback will reveal to you how timely the seller responds to questions, how fast the item was shipped and received, and if the seller is reasonable to work with.

Tip #8: Know the Details

It is interesting to note that mostly everything that a buyer has to know about used iPhones is often neatly spelled out in the used iPhone's product description. Yet, so many used iPhone buyers are not fully aware of what they are getting into when they place their order. It is very important to remember that images can be deceiving, that all pictures are not necessarily an exact image of the item being sold, and that the finer details are supplied via product descriptions. If the description one gets about a used iPhone is terse or short, then it is time to ask the seller questions before buying.

Tip #9: Look For Signals that Suggest Poor Quality

When a used iPhone seller states in an iPhone description that the item is in good condition, but then later tells the potential buyer that the used iPhone is for sale in its present condition, "as is," this is a seller's secret code for "the buyer gets the used iPhone, warts and all, with no returns or guarantees." This means that the seller probably suspects or fully knows that there is an issue with the phone in question, or the seller suspects that something will go wrong with the phone in the near future. Rather than dealing with returns, guarantees, exchanges and refunds, the seller uses the terms "as is" to protect him or herself. Thus, when seeing a used iPhone for sale as is, it is better to seek out a different offer.

Tip #10: Be an Informed Consumer

Getting a used iPhone can be less of a hassle if the consumer informs him or herself about shipping costs, shipping time frames, applicable tax, and any additional fees that might be associated with the used iPhone purchase. The more a consumer knows about the seller, the iPhone, the seller's policies, the used iPhone features, compatible carriers, and what to expect, the better the overall buying experience will be.

Mike Lee's Praiseworthy Plans to Filibuster Raising the Debt Ceiling

themostsearched regulars know I had a knotty dilemma choosing between GOP primary candidates for US Senator for Utah in 2010. Though in the end I voted for Lee I remained critical, less on issues and more so on conduct. My vexation held merit: I believe a healthy dose of critical examination and accountability of our officials by our citizenry is vital to maintaining our republic; of little import, even destructive consequence lies rote adulation (Mmm mmm, mmm) of our pols. In counter to our probing, commendation is essential when politicians do right. Bible study today highlighted this to me:
A false balance is abomination to the Lord: but a just weight is his delight. (Proverbs 11:1)
When I watched Lee on liberal MSNBC (below), I was very impressed with his performance regarding a filibustering of raising the debt ceiling to focus our attention on cutting spending. Lee has it 100% correct: pending something huge like a tough Balanced Budget Amendment, we should not be raising the ceiling. Unlike O'Donnell, I have enough faith in Lee that when he says he's going to attempt a filibuster of raising the debt ceiling, I believe him.

Pink Banana Media Updates for February 2011

:: Mobile Marketing - Web App Development ::

We have begun creating some of our first Web Apps over the past few months for a variety of clients. One of our most recent can be viewed here:
www.CaliforniaGayChamber.com/mobile/.

We've gone this direction because more and more web traffic is going mobile and being driven by the increased technologies in cell phone bandwidth (3G and 4G), as well as the increased adoption of smartphones, including the iPhone, Android-based phones and Blackberries. Optimizing a website for the smaller screen size while also taking into consideration the concept of a touch-based navigation of a website versus the original mouse-based navigation demands taking an entirely new approach to a website's mobile design. Bigger fonts and large, clickable screen areas merged with an aesthetic interface are the name of the game now.

Our mobile websites automatically sense whether the user is viewing the site from a PC, a Mac, a smartphone or a tablet and take the user to that optimized web page. Since the tablet experience (including iPad) is more similar to a smartphone than a laptop, with simply a larger screen, the same touch-based navigation was maintained while being optimized with larger images and more detailed information being made to flow across the screen.
