Puss in Boots, December 5th-7th

Our handsome hero wins the hand in marriage of a petulant Princess. But that’s not the only story in our production of Puss in Boots. There’s a lot else to thrill and bamboozle as unhinged shenanigans abound featuring preening Pusses, odious Ogres, Dames in distress, morose Monarchs, wily Wizards, flatulent Fairies and much more.

Our story was written by a local writer, is set in and around our part of South East London and draws a talented cast from the community. All proceeds of this rambunctious Panto go to good causes - Telegraph Hill Centre and Bold Vision.

Puss in Boots plays from 5 – 7 December, with two shows on Saturday 7 December at 3.30 and 7.30pm. Tickets are £12 / £6. There will be tea, cakes and a bar too, so come on down.

Day of the Dead Silent Disco

Baby Jumble, November 16th

Baby Jumble is organised by two new mums – Jenny and Faye – who are well aware of how the costs associated with having a baby can mount up, so we have decided to tackle the problem head on by launching a series of nearly new baby sales, north and south of the river.

This is an opportunity for parents to earn a bit of extra cash, clear some space at home and feel good about the fact that their little ones pre-loved items are going to a good home, while those looking to kit themselves out with baby essentials will be able to buy good quality items for less.

Our first SE London sale will be taking place at Haberdasher Aske's Hatcham College in Telegraph Hill on Saturday 16th November. Tables are purchased for a fixed price of £25 (early bird tables £20), which means that sellers get to keep 100% of their takings on the day.

Entrance to the sale is £2 per family, with 25% going to a local charity. As well as being able to pick up some lovely nearly new items, there will also be tea, coffee, cake, face painting and other activities. More information can be found at www.babyjumble.com

TURN IT UP - A fundraiser for Make a Difference Trust and Telegraph Hill Centre

St Catherine's Church plays host to TURN IT UP 2013, a fundraiser for The Make A Difference Trust (http://www.madtrust.org.uk/the-hardship-fund.php) and Telegraph Hill Centre (http://thcentre.com) on Saturday 28th Sept from 7pm. Entrance is just £5 (£4 concessions).

A host of young performers from Brockley, New Cross, Nunhead and Telegraph Hill are collaborating to provide an evening of entertainment.   Rock, choirs, opera, jazz, folk ... an impressive musical medley and a showcase for local talent.   Performers live locally, or attend local schools and colleges and are bringing together their diverse talents in what promises to be an impressive show.    Families are very welcome, come one, come all.

This is the third such TURN IT UP event organised by the talented local composer and performer Fenella Lawrence.

Telegraph Hill Centre plays host to a Table Top Sale on Saturday 21st September from 1-4 pm.

In recent months Telegraph Hill Centre, an independent, self-funding community centre, has undergone a refurbishment, and work continues to develop new areas within the building. Come on down bag a bargain, quaff some coffee, cake and biscuits and have fun.

There are lots of nearly new and high quality goods, vintage pieces and one-offs at prices to gladden a weak wallet. Along with cake, a cafe and craft sessions, there will be lots to see and do.

The Telegraph Hill Panto Auditions

It's Panto time again on Telegraph Hill. We've been hard at it, polishing puns, winkling in innuendo, and generally working up a lather and we think we've finally got it just right. Now it's the turn of lots of lovely people to make it come alive, so we are holding auditions:

Telegraph Hill Centre – Craftroom, Thursday 12th September, 2013, 7.30pm

We are looking for a good mix of people and ages. You don’t need experience. Most past players hadn’t been on stage before. The point of the Panto is to have fun. We will rehearse for the next two months before putting on four shows in early December which will be fast, fun and funny.

Please spread the word far and wide - this year, the Panto is a fundraiser for Telegraph Hill Centre and Bold Vision.

Telegraph Hill kids' theatre workshop

The Beehive present a Creative Theatre Workshop for 5 to 8 year-olds, which will culminate in a performance of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The workshop is facilitated by Abigail Kessel, Katy Robb, and Victoria Waddington (Katy is a member of St Catherine’s congregation).

It will feature contemporary dance, singing, drama, prop making and scenery painting and promises to be safe, fun, engaging and a great way to introduce children to theatre.

Summer gardening workshops with Common Growth

Carlo writes with news about free gardening workshops for kids and adults run by local group Common Growth:

First up is the kid's workshop on Wednesday 7th of August called herb spiral fun. It is suitable for children of all ages and runs from 10.30-12.00, and will involve fun learning activities, games and singing.

After that there will be an adult's workshop on Saturday 17th of August called Herbs and their uses and will run from 10.30 to 12.30. As usual this will be a mix of learning and practical activity.

The workshops are informal and fun, and it’s a great way to learn a few more gardening skills and share tips with other gardeners.

Persian BBQ Pop-Up

Peckham's Persepolis is staging another Telegraph Hill event. They say:

Well we must have behaved ourselves at last month's pop-up at the Hill Station as they've gone and asked us back. And we couldn't be more chuffed: the place has a lovely vibe  and the denizens of Telegraph Hill are a jolly bunch too.

So on the evening of Friday 30th August we will be offering what is pretty much a Persepolis-Style-Persian-Style barbecue.

We'll be kicking off with a trio of dips: must-o-khiar (yoghurt with cucumber, mint, raisins and walnuts), tashi (tahina paste rich with herbs, lemon and garlic), and mama ghanoush (with courgettes). There will also be salad olivieyeh (posh Persian potato salad) and Shirazi bean salsa.

Next up there will be herbed halloumi and home-made minced lamb sausages (or aubergine for veggies).

Then the action switches to the grills, where we will be serving Moroccan marinated souvlakia (pork), jujeh kebab (Iranian chicken with saffron and lemon), and liver with pomegranate and mint. Vegetarians will be offered ghormeh sabzi  a lush casserole of herbs and kidney beans and dried limes. These dishes will be accompanied by bread, rice, pickles and fresh herbs.

Pudding will be a very decadent pistachio and cardamom cake, served with rose kaymak (creamy stuff).

This feast is a set price of £35.00 per head and there wre will be a range of reasonably priced wines and beers specially selected for the occasion which customers can purchase separately from the licensed bar.

The Friends of Telegraph Hill Park went into hibernation but are staging a comeback. Sylvestra Le Touzel and Paul Milnes write:

You may be aware that there is no Friends’ meeting scheduled at the moment, the last having taken place on April 8th. This has happened for various reasons, including some members moving away or resigning due to other commitments. 

As past chairs, we feel it is important to keep the lines of communication with Glendale and Lewisham active in order that the park continues to be maintained in a pleasing way, so we have arranged a meeting for Monday, 29th July, at 8pm in the Hill Station, to which everyone is cordially invited. The purpose will be to explore how we can get the group back on track.

Tapas fundraiser for Party in the Park

The Telegraph Hill Centre for hire

The recently refurbished Telegraph Hill Centre will drop its pants for cash. The THC, which receives no Council subsidy, is a brilliant flexible space (in an area that's a little short on venues for hire) and is now touting itself around for business. The options include:

The Parlour – for one-to-one therapy, massage or counselling sessions. From £10

The Craftroom – a medium large space with its own access and facilities. From £20

The Lounge – a large and flexible room suitable for groups of people or activities. This room is filled with natural dalylight and comfortably seats 30 people for a conference style presentation or board meeting, but can also accomodate a yoga or exercise class of up to 12 people with room to spare. From £25.

Narthex – the west end of St Catherine’s Church (though separate), this large space is ideal for staged performances, concerts, parties or AGMs and can accomodate 80 people seated at tables, 100 people seated in rows and up to 200 people circulating. From £30.

Wants vs Needs

Wanted 2 is a fundraiser for a PA for the Hill Station cafe in Telegraph Hill.

Last year, 'Wanted' raised around £400 but the organisers but the organisers are after a serious speakerboxxx, so they're doing another event to raise more money. Here are the details:

Wanted 2 starts at 7.30pm on Friday 21st June at Hill Station, there will be music, comedy, food (a BBQ), a raffle (with amazing prizes!) and a licensed bar.

Acts include: Eliza & Pearl (Folk harmonies) Open Road (Bluegrass and Country) Dino (Singer/Songwriter) Phil & Martin (Comedy/Sketches) Paul & Maggie (Jazz) Jon & Anna (Acoustic Pop) Pagoda Sun (Acoustic Folk Pop) The Pretty Boys (Winston, Lex and Ben - Eclectic and Surpising).

Some asked - Why a PA? The Festival PA is huge and heavy, is stored away at the furthest end of Telegraph Hill Centre and often in use (esp. during the Festival). Having a Hill Station PA will ensure a simple 'plus and play' option throughout the year, but especially at Festival time.

RumBQ and Street Party

If you're on or around Telegraph Hill this weekend, then do come along to Telegraph Hill Lower Park and celebrate in the warm and sunny weather we're promised for Sunday.   In the spirit of loving London - and our little part of it especially - there will be a family friendly event with drinks, food, bands, DJs and a soundsystem to cheer the Bank Holiday along.   The event starts at 1pm and ends at 5pm.

This event was originally due to have taken place durring Telegraph Hill Festival.   Regrettably, due to bad weather the event was postponed so takes place this Sunday.
