Americans and Retirement
In a recent article for Pew Research Social and Demographic Trends, Rich Morin and Richard Fry write that more Americans are worrying about how they will pay for retirement and adults in their late-30's are the most concerned. The findings are based on a Pew Research Center survey of 2,508 Americans fielded between July 16 and 26, 2012 and conducted by telephone and cell phone interviews.
The question, “Overall, how confident are you that you (and your spouse) will have enough income and assets to last throughout your retirement years? Are you very confident, somewhat confident, not too confident or not at all confident?” was also asked in 2009. Nearly 40% of respondents say that they are “not too” or “not at all” confident that they will have enough income and assets to sustain them in retirement, up from 25% in 2009. 53% of respondents between the ages of 36 and 40 years respond that they are “not too” or “not at all” confident that they will be able to sustain themselves in retirement.
