180 Brockley Road approved

Cllr Mike Harris reports on Twitter that Lewisham Council has approved the redevelopment of the MOT garage at 180 Brockley Road.
The original scheme was sent back for further work as the Council wanted to drive a harder bargain for affordable homes. The developers have now agreed that any "excessive profit" of more than 20% will be diverted to fund affordable housing schemes.

The ground floor will feature flexible space for approximately four commercial units.

Some Thoughts on the Business Case of Gay2Day.com

Gay2Day.com is an entirely new site concept that we believe has not been attempted yet… of course, it’s an evolution of the growth of online marketing in this social media age, pioneered by Friendster and MySpace and taken to where we’re at today by the genius of Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.  A company such as ours is simply “layering” a business process and strategy on top of this social media revolution we’re experiencing today, in an effort to develop actual business metrics in terms of reach, engagement and interactivity between businesses and consumers in a way that will match more readily the measuring techniques the advertising and marketing communities we typically work with are using today.
With the analytical tools provided by Facebook, Twitter and many other 3rd party programs designed to work with these company’s APIs to do a deep-dive analysis on exactly WHO is clicking on and sharing WHAT and to WHOM are these shares actually directed to, the information we’re finding is confirming that the world of online marketing is undergoing an incredible and marked change that hasn’t been seen since the debut of banner ads, blogs and e-mail campaigns over 10 years ago.
image
Our goal here at Gay2Day.com is to develop a new site concept and community, whereby we’re bringing together and identifying the strongest individuals in the LGBT community using social media, and incentivizing them to talk about our client’s products and services, including hotel experiences, restaurants,
etc.image
There are individuals out there doing this now on a case-by-case basis.  We’re adding a stronger business layer on top of these endeavors, putting a trackable system in place (using hashtags, Twitter analytics and Facebook analytics) and measuring the results in terms of reach, engagement and exposure.
image
As an individual business owner, one could go through their own social media contacts and identify who are the strongest in their network, chatting, sharing, commenting and liking content, and develop those individuals out by focusing more attention on them, offering them personally to come to your resort, etc.  Andrew Christian and Jeffrey Sanker are two companies doing an incredible job with their current fan base, providing them highly desirable content for members to share (scantily clad hot guys in underwear always works!), as well as encouraging members to share their hot, shirtless workout pics via social media in order to score some free event tickets.  The sky’s the limit when it comes to opportunities at our fingertips that we can use to keep our social media fans and members engaged and interacting, both with us and with each other, inviting their “friends of friends” to do the same.
image
We’re taking this process to the next level, whereby we’ll be locating and grooming those individuals who you would be looking for on your own for your business and providing them a process and a strategy for success, both for you and for them.  For you and your business, you receive additional exposure out there with the right people selected to spread that word for you.  For the consumer, they get treated a bit more special than they would have otherwise, as a regular client guest of yours… it’s like you’re hosting an LGBT press fam trip of 1, but on a more regular basis.
image
We’ll be testing a lot of ideas out with this site, as it’s all about better understanding human behavior and how our members will choose to both comment, share and like our partner businesses, as well as respond and behave in a competitive environment whereby they are incentivized to be better than their fellow Gay2Day.com member counterparts.
We’re starting this out at $195 per month for most businesses to give this type of marketing a try.  One can see what we’ve developed so far at:
http://www.gay2day.com/OfferDetail.cfm?businessid=3161
http://www.gay2day.com/OfferDetail.cfm?businessid=3143
and
http://www.gay2day.com/Campaign.cfm?id=4
We look forward to working with you all to bring more and more opportunities to our membership so that they can feel they are part of an online community that “gets” it and “gets” them, understanding that they are a serious and strategic component to a company’s LGBT media outreach… where once it was magazines, newspapers, websites and blogs… now it’s fast becoming the dominance of the power of the individual.  Companies are learning more and more how to embrace this paradigm shift in terms of who's voices get heard, and which of these voices get to say something meaningful about a company’s brand… we’re no longer dealing with PR professionals in one silo, ad agencies in another and marketing ad copy in a 3rd.  It’s all coming together quite rapidly, via social media, and empowering the individual to become on par with and in some ways an even stronger voice than traditional media today… once someone with influence posts an article or photo or video that goes “viral” on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, that individual has just entered the world of modern day journalism.  He/she is still just one component of a vast network of similar influential individuals, but that one individual does not work inside of a vacuum in social media… those social media networks and those “friends of friends” sharing, liking, commenting and ReTweeting their content carry the heavy lifting in today’s media world.  Pink Banana Media and Gay2Day.com are there to capitalize on this continually evolving phenomenon and help navigate your company’s online marketing strategy into these unknown and sometimes choppy waters, ensuring you and your team experience smooth sailing along the entire way (and grow your business to boot!)

Lewisham votes for legal action on A&E and rate hikes

Catford blogger Clare reports that Lewisham Council last night gave the go-ahead to take legal action to prevent the downgrade of Lewisham A&E. She also notes:

The vote came at a full council meeting which also discussed the budget for 2013-14 and recommended a 1.5% rise in council tax and accompanying budget cuts to meet the required savings of £21.3 million based on the budget given to the council from central government.

Share of Young Americans With Debt at Lowest Level Since 1983

According to Pew Research Center, although young adults took a hit in the recession, many actually managed to decrease their debt from 2007 to 2010. In 2007, among those under the age of 35, their debt totaled $21,912. But in 2010 the median debt level of young adults fell to $15,473 which is a 29% decline in just 3 years. It was estimated that older adults owed more than younger adults and unfortunately, their decline in debt was modest compared to young adults. Older adults were $32,543 in debt as of 2007 but they did manage to pay off some of their debt. This brought their median total debt level to $30,070 in 2010 which is only a 8% decline in debt.

Today's young adults also did a better job of paying off their debt during the recession than young adults in other time periods. The Pew Research Center estimates that in 2010 78% of households headed by a young adult held any debt. Although this figure may seem high, this actually marks the lowest level of young debt holders since 1983 when this data first started being collected by the government.

Although this news is certainly welcome to those who worry about high debt ratios among young Americans, it is important to examine why they have less debt. For one, part of this decline is due simply to the fact that fewer young Americans own homes or carry credit card balances. For instance, in 2007 it was estimated that 48% of young Americans had credit card debt compared to 39% of young adults in 2010. Moreover, although the total median debt level may have been lower in 2010, the proportion of households carrying student debt rose dramatically. In 2001, only 26% of younger households had student loan debt compared to 40% in 2010, marking a 14% increase in less than a decade.

Slow Cooker Red Curry Beef Pot Roast – Teaching Old Meat New Tricks

When shopping, I like to take a quick peek at the end of the meat case where they sometimes have marked-down cuts that are past their prime. I usually stay away from the smaller, thinner pieces, as they tend to go bad faster, but once in a while I’ll find a big roast, like the one that inspired this delicious red beef curry; and as the old saying goes, the only thing better than a 3-pound chuck roast, is a half-priced, 3-pound chuck roast.

By the way, this “Reduced for Quick Sale” meat is generally fine taste and texture-wise, but the surface of the meat has oxidized, so it doesn’t look very appetizing. Other than that, it’s perfectly fine to use, especially in a slow-braised recipe like this.

I cooked mine on low, for about 7 or 8 hours, until it was fork tender, but if you’re in a hurry, you can do it on a higher setting. Conventional wisdom is that the longer slower method is superior, but in all honesty, I don’t think there's a huge difference, so suit yourself. No matter what setting you use, simply do not stop until the meat is tender.

Some of the most frustrating emails I get, are the ones that say, “I followed your braised-whatever recipe exactly, but the meat came out hard.” Actually, no you didn’t. Every time I give an approximate cooking time for something like this, I’ll always say, “or until fork tender.” So why would anyone stop cooking it while the meat is still hard? I find it as mystifying as I do annoying.

Anyway, assuming you don’t stop, won’t stop, until the meat is succulent, you are in for a real treat. Feel free to add any vegetables you like, and if you want, you can cook them separately and just add to the finished dish. I generally don’t serve this over rice if I use potatoes, but that's just my personal hang up, so don’t feel like you need to deny yourself that particular pleasure. I really hope you give this a try soon. Enjoy!

Ingredients for 4 giant or 6 regular portions:
2 1/2 or 3 pound beef chuck roast
salt and pepper to taste
2 tsp vegetable oil
1 chopped onion
1 or 2 tsp red curry paste, or to taste
2 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground coriander
2 cups chicken broth
1 can (14 oz) coconut milk
1 can (10-oz) diced tomatoes with green chilies (or any diced tomato product)
3 tbsp Asian fish sauce, or to taste
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tbsp tomato paste
4 cloves minced garlic
1 thumb-sized piece of ginger, sliced
juice of one lime
2 bay leaves
1 1/2 pound small potatoes, halved
4 or 5 baby bok choy, sliced
1 rounded teaspoon cornstarch, dissolved in 1 tablespoon cold water
To garnish:
chopped roasted peanuts
chopped fresh cilantro leaves

:Nokia Lumia 720 Windows Phone (review):

Nokia Lumia 720 Windows Phone (review)

The Nokia Lumia 720 highlighs the company's commitment to competitively priced smartphones

Nokia used this year's Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona to unveil two new low-cost Lumia devices, highlighting the company's commitment to the competitively priced smartphones. The Lumia 720 is a lightweight, colourful smartphone that Nokia claims has the "best camera experience of any mid-range smartphone."

Pros
  • Likely low cost
  • f1.9 apeture camera
  • Slim and colourful design

Cons

  • No 4G capabilities
  • No full HD video recording
  • No Australian ETA

Bottom Line

The Nokia Lumia 720 is a lightweight, colourful smartphone that Nokia claims has the "best camera experience of any mid-range smartphone."

The Lumia 720 follows the design trend set by previous Nokia Windows phones like the Lumia 620. It has a relatively slim profile at 9mm and uses a polycarbonate, unibody design that weighs just 128g. Nokia says the Lumia 720 is the first phone to feature curved glass at this price point. The phone comes in five bright colours — white, red, yellow, cyan and black.
The Lumia 720 has a 4.3in 'Clear Black' display with a resolution of 480x800. It can't quite match the full HD displays that are being used on most flagship models this year but it shouldn't have to at this price. So as long as it's competitively priced in Australia, the Lumia 720's screen will perfectly suit the average consumer.

Nokia is really pushing its cameras and the Lumia 720 is no exception. The 6.7-megapixel rear-facing camera has a Carl Zeiss lens and an f/1.9 aperture. The company claims the latter is bigger than almost any high-end smartphone on the market and will therefore capture better photos in low-light conditions. It can't record full HD video, though, topping out at a maximum of 720p.
The Lumia 720 also includes a 1.3-megapixel camera with a wide-angle lens. The phone comes preloaded with a number of Nokia's existing digital camera lens apps, including the Cinemagraph, Smart Shoot, and Panorama lens, and comes with new 'Glam Me' and 'Place Tag' lenses. The latter adds geotag information to photos captured with the main camera, while the Glam Me lens is a filter that allows users to spruce up "selfies" captured with the front camera.

The Nokia Lumia 720 is powered by a 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, has 512MB RAM and comes with 8GB of internal memory. There's a microSD card slot to expand the memory, along with built-in NFC connectivity. Nokia also provides a wireless charging option, which can be utilised by purchasing an optional, snap-on cover for the Lumia 720. The phone has a 2000mAh battery that lists 520 hours of standby time and up to 13 hours and 20 minutes of talk time.
Like all of Nokia's Windows Phone 8 devices, the Lumia 720 comes preloaded with the company's suite of exclusive apps, Drive, Transit, Maps and Music. Interestingly, the apps have been re-branded from 'Nokia' to 'Here', so they're now called Here Maps, Here Drive and Here Transit.
The Lumia 720 has a relatively slim profile at 9mm and uses a polycarbonate, unibody design. The Lumia 720 has a relatively slim profile at 9mm and uses a polycarbonate, unibody design.
There's been no word of an Australian launch time or local pricing details, but the Lumia 720 is expected to sell in Asia and parts of Europe in from Q2 2013.

Banana Crumble Pie

Another creation from banana.... after successful banana apam before this, I tried to make chunky banana pie with crumble topping and am impressed with my own creation! I used very light and crumbly short crust pastry... outcome was pleasantly crispy & melt in the mouth but I had one problem.... making it in the pie maker without any casing will make it impossible to lift it out in one whole piece because the pastry is so crumbly while it is hot. To save the next batch, I rolled the pastry on a paper cake liner before placing it into the pie maker. The pie is best consumed immediately and served with ice-cream which I regret because it wasn't planned earlier. Sometimes when idea sprung out, I just gotta jump immediately before the mood dies out and as a consequence, not everything is available as wished.

Makes 5 four inches pies
SWEET CRUST:
200g Flour
125g Cold Butter
60g Sugar
1 Egg Yolk
1 tsp Vanilla Essence
2 tbsp Ice Water

~360g Banana - cubed
20g Brown Sugar + 1/4 tsp Cinnamon Powder
30g Raisins
CRUMBLE TOPPING:
75g Flour
40g Butter
1 tbsp Sugar
- mix all to form bread crumbs

METHOD:
1. Mix all crust ingredients in a food processor.
Chill 30 minutes.
2. Roll out the pastry and cut with a round cutter.
Place it in pie maker or muffin tin.
Bake until slightly cooked (2 minutes in pie maker, 5 minutes in oven).
3. Mix all the filling ingredients & spoon into the casings.
Sprinkled with topping & bake in pie maker for 5 minutes (estimately abt 15 minutes in oven) or until golden color.

BAHASA MALAYSIA VERSION

Resipi kali ni Along guna shortcrust pastry (tak tau camna nak translate ni), yg sememang nya amat rapuh & gebu. So bila masak dlm pie maker, bila nak keluarkan habis berderai sebab belum sempat sejuk & mengeras. Untuk selesaikan masalh tu, Along gelek pastry tu atas kertas kek baru letakkan ke dlm pie maker... barulah senang nak angkat pie yg sudah masak.

Pie ni sedap di makan terus semasa crust nya masih rangup. Kalau nak simpan sampai esuk, kena di panaskan semula baru lah sedap. Hidangkan dgn aiskrim atau sos kastad baru terangkat tapi tak sempat lak nak pi beli eskrim dah abis ngap....hehe.

In the cooking process

Waveform cross correlation for seismic monitoring of underground nuclear explosions. Part I: Grand master events

A new paper is now available via arxiv.org:

Abstract

Seismic monitoring of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty using waveform cross correlation requires a uniform coverage of the globe with master events well recorded at array stations of the International Monitoring System. The essence of cross correlation as a monitoring tool consists in a continuous comparison of digital waveforms at a given station with waveform templates from the global set of master events. At array stations, cross correlation demonstrates a higher resolution because the time delays at individual sensors from master and slave events are the same but they may differ from theoretical ones used in standard beamforming. In the regions where master events and thus waveform templates are available, one can reduce the amplitude threshold of signal detection by a factor of 2 to 3 relative to standard beamforming and STA/LTA detector used at the International Data Centre. The gain in sensitivity corresponds to a body wave magnitude reduction by 0.3 to 0.4 units and doubles the number of detected events. This gain is crucial for seismic monitoring under the CTBT. The coverage by real master events is sparse and confined to areas with historical seismicity, however. In two parts of this study, we investigate the possibility to populate the global grid with real and synthetic master events. In Part I, we replicate a high-quality master event over a regular grid several hundred kilometers from its actual position. In Part II, we model waveform templates using synthetic seismograms with the aim to apply them in aseismic zones. Both approaches are tested using the aftershock sequence of the April 11, 2012 Sumatera earthquake (Ms(IDC)=8.2). We used sixteen master events to recover the aftershocks in the Reviewed Event Bulletin of the IDC.

U.S. Hispanic Adults Twice as Likely to Identify or Lean Democratic

According to Gallup, a compilation of  daily tracking data for 2012 shows that 51% of Hispanic adults identify as or lean Democratic, with 24% of Hispanic respondents identifying as or leaning Republican.  Upon further probing of initial responses, 20% of Hispanics were true independents and did not have a party preference.

This trends holds true across age groups for the Hispanic population.  50% of the 18-34 and 35-54 age group identified or leaned Democratic, while the 59% of the 55+ age group identified similarly.  While similar across age groups, the Hispanic population is not as identified with the Democratic Party as the Non-Hispanic Black population, but more likely than the Non-Hispanic White population to identify with the Democratic Party.  In addition, an earlier Gallup analysis reveals that U.S.-born Hispanics were more likely to be Republican than their foreign-born counterparts.

Законопроект "Об оскорблении чувств младших научных сотрудников"
starshinazapasa
February 27th, 10:03

Lyrics: Johan Malmgren ft. Lynn Olsen - Nothing On Earth

Nothing On Earth
Johan Malmgren ft. Lynn Olsen

We could take away
The darkest shade of grey
If we use our spectrum

And we could defy
Gravity tonight
If we stay together

Happiness is a place on earth
Happiness is a place on earth
Happiness is a place on earth
Oh it is oh it is

Take away
Darkest shades of grey
Stay together

Happiness is a place on earth
Happiness is a place on earth
Happiness is a place on earth
Oh it is oh it is

Out now on Beatport, will be available in all portals on March 4.

Nothing On Earth (RBR033):
Nothing On Earth (Vocal Mix)
Nothing On Earth (Dub Mix)
Nothing On Earth (Vocal Radio Edit)
Nothing On Earth (Dub Radio Edit)

Bring out your smile and rock along, cause those are the exact side-effects to the latest Re*Brand smash. After making his grand debut 6 months ago, Johan Malmgren returns with the explosive piece of 'Nothing On Earth' feat. Lynn Olsen!

Through the energetic sounds of 'Come Back' and 'Find You', Swedish producer Johan Malmgren set himself a high bar.

Luckily, he's the perfectionist type, making sure that each and every single production of his is an absolute killer. 'Nothing On Earth' applies to those same rules, taking you on a real feel-good trip of bulky bass, whooping basslines and groovy prog-house interventions.

Featuring the sugar-sweet vocals of Dutch singer Lynn Olsen, 'Nothing On Earth' takes you in from first play on. Told you it would bring out your smile!

Bye: The Last Man

The Labour Party has announced that its candidate for Lewisham Deptford (which covers Brockley) in the next election will be drawn from an all-woman shortlist. This is a very safe Labour seat, meaning that Lewisham Deptford is effectively guaranteed another female MP once Dame Joan Ruddock steps down.

Lewisham Deptford is one of five London seats which will be subject to all-female Labour shortlists. Harriet Harman, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, said: “I am calling on women to put themselves forward for the All Women Shortlists announced in London."

All-women shortlists are probably the least-worst solution to the challenge of creating a more representative House of Commons.

Conway bites dog

When a dog bites a man, that is not news, because it happens so often. But if Conway finishes a job satisfactorily, however small, that is news.

Still no sign of the new zebra crossings in Brockley Cross, but by god, that is a tree - and Conway has successfully planted it. Unless someone else did - and they probably did, but Conway dug the bloody hole, you can't take that away from them! And there's another one next to it too. Two trees in only two years.

Also on the subject of street trees, local group Brockley Street Trees reports that "thirteen new trees will be planted in the conservation area to replace many street trees removed last summer due to disease. These have all been match-funded with local residents contributing 50% of the cost, and Lewisham Council the other 50%."

In March, the group is also planting 70 metres of fruit hedge in Hilly Fields. If you'd like to join them, full details here. With thanks to Monkeyboy for the photo.

Lyrics: Paramore - Now

Now
Paramore

Don't try to take this from me
Don't try to take this from me
Now
Repeat

Feels like I'm waking from the dead
And everyone's been waiting on me
Least now, I'll never have to wonder what it's like
To sleep a year away
Weren't we indestructible?
Thought that we could brave it all
Never thought that what would take me out was hiding down below

Lost the battle, win the war
Bringing my sinking ship back to the shore
Starting over, head back in
There's a time and a place to die but this ain't it
If there's a future, we want it now
If there's a future, we want it now
If there's a future, we want it now
If there's a future, we want it now

Don't try to take this from me
Don't try to take this from me
Now
Repeat

Wish I could find a crystal ball
For the days I feel completely worthless
You know I'd use it all for good
I would not take it for granted
Instead I have some memories
for the days I don't feel anything
At the least, they will remind me not to make the same mistakes again

Lost the battle, win the war
Bringing my sinking ship back to the shore
Starting over, head back in
There's a time and a place to die but this ain't it
If there's a future, we want it now
If there's a future, we want it now
If there's a future, we want it now
If there's a future, we want it now

There's a time and a place to die
There's a time and a place to die
This ain't it

There's a time and a place to die
This ain't it, this ain't it

There's a time and a place to die
There's a time and a place to die
This ain't it

If there's a future, we want it now
(Repeat 4x)

The Blind Pig pop up bar / exhibition

If phase one of Brockley's East London Line-led regeneration ended in 2012 with its cafe revolution largely complete, phase two is going to be mostly about booze. This will be a good thing. We've now got a daytime economy. Time for the night. Following the news that Brockley is due to be blessed with two microbreweries and the return of Jam Circus comes news of a pop-up bar in Drakefell Road.

Jo Dennis writes:

The Blind Pig is a pop up bar and exhibition space at the end of a suburban south London garden. Speakeasys or “blind pigs” were a product of prohibition and this DIY art space and social gathering spot, created by artist Jo Dennis, is in part a response to the chastened times in which we live.

The exhibition is a solo presentation of paintings and drawings by the artist. Her work uses disparate components, dark humour and personal symbolism. In this collection they reference vanity, identity and what it is to be human. Some of her ideas manifest as portraits - some surreal, some abstract - and others a mix of all three.

“When I moved in there was this awesome shed at the bottom of my garden, I have trawled around skips and scaffolder’s to find reusable and free wood to make the shed fit for purpose.

I made an installation in it last year for the Telegraph Hill Festival open studios and the response was brilliant. This year it will be opening for the festival again but the instal will be a complete change from what people saw last year.” Jo Dennis.

Jo Dennis graduated from Goldsmiths College in 2002 and has exhibited nationally and internationally including showing at the ICA and The Royal Academy. In 2010 she partnered with artist Dido Hallett to set up Asylum, an arts space in a derelict chapel in Peckham. Asylum is on The South London Art Map
and was voted one of The Guardian’s top 10 London Art spaces 2011.

Opening party Friday 8th March 6pm -10pm. Open Sat 9th, Sun 10th and Sat 23rd 2pm - 7pm. 200 Drakefell Road, SE4 2DR.

:PlayStation App To Be Released For IOS:

PlayStation App To Be Released For IOS

Sony recently announced the launch of the next generation of their PlayStation gaming console, the PlayStation 4. While gaming fans are eagerly awaiting its release, the company also went ahead and explained that people using smartphones and tablets would also be able to play the games available on the platform. How? You would have to download the PlayStation app and you would get access to a wide range of games you can play on PS4.
PlayStation App to Be Released For iOS
The news was made public at the Future of PlayStation conference. It has been a while since Sony had come out with PlayStation 3 and fans were awaiting the release of the next version. Well, that wait is almost over with the announcement that PlayStation 4 would be available for sale soon. The surprising thing is that almost concurrently, Sony revealed the app for their gaming console. Some industry insiders suspect that the app might actually have a negative impact on the sales of PlayStation 4.
However, this is not the case as explained by Sony. The handheld devices would only work as a second screen for users. They would still have to play the game on the console. The app would enable them to supplement the gaming experience by incorporating the use of their iPhone, iPad or any smartphone which runs on Android. This means that the PlayStation 4 would offer the conventional gaming experience, i.e. playing on TV.
The additional option of having a second screen comes into play for adventure games. You can view the map for the game on your device while playing the game on a larger screen. You simply have to download the PlayStation app to your tablet or smartphone to access this new feature. However, this is not the only way in which the new app can be used. It could actually enhance your experience of playing games on the PlayStation 4.
With the PlayStation app, you get access to a large number of PS4 games even when you are not at home. You can buy them through the app and then download them on to your console. What’s more, you will also be able to watch other players in action on your handheld device. It does sound like an exciting feature but whether it would be able to convince people to buy the PS4 remains to be seen. The sales projections are strong so one can only wait for the console to be released.
